Causes of Sleeplessness

There are a number of reasons you may suffer from sleeplessness. Causes can include: sleep disorders, body pain and its physical and psychological impact, and stressors associated with the daily activities of life.

Sleep disorders

Do you spend enough time in bed and still wake up feeling sleepy during the day? Then you may be one of approximately 40 million Americans who have a sleep disorder. While there are many types, the chronic sleep disorders include:

  • Insomnia (sleeplessness can result from stress)
  • Sleep apnea (breathing-related sleep disorder
  • Restless leg syndrome (tingling sensations in legs and feet)
  • Narcolepsy ("sleep attacks" during the day)

Sleep disorders can significantly affect your health, safety, and well-being, however, there are treatments for sleeplessness, such as Excedrin PM Headache. Talk to your doctor if you think you may have a sleep disorder.

Sleeplessness can also be either pain or stress related

Even if you're able to fall asleep with nagging body pain, it can easily awaken you from your sleep and prevent you from getting the proper sleep. People who are unable to sleep are also more aware of pain.

Have you ever felt tired, yet you're unable to sleep? The pain associated with stress may cause sleeplessness if not treated. Your body may be ready for rest, but your mind isn't. Stress, pressure at work, pressure at home, and many other factors can contribute to pain and sleeplessness. You should be aware of the cause of your sleeplessness and the impact it is having on your life when selecting a treatment. Keeping a log may help.
